What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The procedure

Everything you need to know about this popular surgery

The BBL or Brazilian Butt Lift is the nickname given to a surgery that combines two different procedures; liposuction and fat transfer to the buttocks.

Liposuction is achieved by inserting a small thin hollow tube called a cannula to loosen up the fat and extract it. There will be small incisions around the areas of excess fat, which in the case of the BBL would be around the torso (also known as lipo 360): the back, stomach, and flanks.

These incisions will then be used to drain the lymphatic liquid post-surgery during recovery. (LINK)

The maximum amount of fat that can be removed during the BBL is 4 Liters. Once the fat is removed, it’s strategically transferred to the booty in key areas that will result in that small waist and hourglass figure.

During this procedure, you will not feel any pain as you will be under general anesthesia; the duration is approximately about 2-4 hours in total.

Are you the right candidate for a BBL?

Body Mass Index

Moving forward with a BBL is an investment in yourself, and it’s also our job to help you and give you the best options. Our limit of BMI for BBL is 33. You can calculate your BMI here. It is a number that calculates your body fat composition in accordance with your height. The reason this is important is that if this number is too high, then the risk during surgery increases.

In addition to this, having a number below 33 guarantees there is excess fat to be removed but also the prognosis of excellent results.

Medical History

Generally speaking, for any cosmetic procedure, the patient is responsible for being fully transparent with us as far as their medical history. Depending on your individual medical history, we will provide you with a lab request order detailing the needed bloodwork and/or exams needed:

Some things to keep in mind and avoid:

  • A healthy diet for pre and post-surgery
  • Non Smoker or willingness to stop at least 5 weeks prior surgery
  • Open communication on any introduction of new medications or supplements
  • Clearance from a specialist for any pre-existing medical conditions

Best candidates for BBL

We welcome everyone for consultations, whether it is to lift a saggy booty, make your booty bigger, or enhance your booty. The best candidates are the ones open to great results but, at the same time, have realistic expectations.

It’s important to consider that some might not be the best candidates, and our job is to inform our patients what their best options are or what they can expect if they don’t follow those recommendations. The BBL procedure cannot be performed without liposuction, so we will list the qualities of those patients who would benefit the most:

  • BMI over 22/24 and under 33 (these numbers are not fixed and can fluctuate depending on each patient)
  • Patients with good skin elasticity (Your skin will remain the same after lipo, so if it currently sags there’s a chance you will see more sagging after BBL) a good option is either considering a tummy tuck or being mindful that you will need one to remove the extra skin after the BBL.

There are also some issues the BBL is not able to repair such as:

  • Removing cellulite
  • Erasing stretch marks
  • Correcting Diastasis
  • Removing any foreign substances previously introduced to your buttocks for enhancement

Overall the Brazilian Butt Lift is great for contouring and improving the shape of your body using your own fat. Patients usually feel more secure of themselves and are motivated to maintain these results as part of their lifestyles.

What are the risks of BBL?

During the Operation

It’s important to note any surgical procedure will have risks. We will take into account your medical history, and any concerns will be answered by your coordinator and surgeon.

Some of the risks associated with the Brazilian Butt Lift are:

  • Infection
  • Stretch marks
  • Blood clots
  • Cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Fat embolism

These are risks that can be prevented by making sure the surgeon and the facility of your choosing are reputable and experienced performing BBL(s).

During Recovery

Each patient is unique and, therefore, will recover differently, the risks of any procedure are

not desired or expected outcomes. Following your surgeon’s instructions for recovery (LINK) is vital to the prevention of any undesired results.

Keep in mind the BBL is not a replacement for permanent weight loss, the newly transferred fat will behave as ordinary fat, meaning it will enlarge if there is significant weight gain and shrink if there is drastic weight loss as well. The only difference is that you will have more fat cells in your booty and less in the areas the lipo was performed, so it might change if there is drastic weight loss, but it will not be as it was before.

Leading a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet and exercise can help maintain and even enhance your results.

Most Common Questions About BBL

How long do the results of a Brazilian Butt Lift last?

The results of a Brazilian Butt Lift can last for several years, but they may be affected by weight fluctuations and the natural aging process.

When can I return to work after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most patients can return to work within 1 to 2 weeks after a Brazilian Butt Lift, depending on their individual recovery process and the type of work they do.

Can I sit on my butt after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most surgeons recommend avoiding sitting directly on your butt for at least two weeks after surgery to allow the transferred fat to properly settle. Instead, patients should sit on a cushion or special chair that distributes weight evenly on the thighs and hips.

Can I exercise after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

While light exercise like walking is encouraged after surgery, strenuous activities and exercises that put pressure on the buttocks should be avoided for at least six weeks to allow for proper healing.

Will I need to wear a special garment after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most surgeons will require patients to wear a compression garment for several weeks after surgery to help reduce swelling and improve healing.

Can I have a Brazilian Butt Lift if I have a history of back pain?

Patients with a history of back pain should consult with their surgeon to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure. In some cases, a Brazilian Butt Lift can actually help alleviate back pain by improving posture.

Will I have scars after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

While there will be some small incisions where the fat is harvested and injected, most incisions can be hidden in natural creases and will fade over time.

How long do I need to wear compression garments after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most surgeons will recommend wearing compression garments for at least four to six weeks after surgery to help reduce swelling and improve healing.

Can I smoke or drink alcohol after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Smoking and drinking alcohol can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Patients are typically advised to avoid these activities for at least four weeks after surgery.

Can I have a Brazilian Butt Lift if I am overweight?

While a Brazilian Butt Lift can help contour and shape the buttocks, it is not a weight loss procedure. Patients should be at or near their ideal body weight before undergoing the surgery.

Can I get a Brazilian Butt Lift if I have cellulite?

While a Brazilian Butt Lift can improve the shape and size of the buttocks, it will not eliminate cellulite. Patients with severe cellulite may require additional treatments to improve the appearance of their skin.
